This is the story of an elite athlete who is viciously attacked during a national championship. Then, just hours after the attack and in spite of his injuries, he returns to the competition. And wins. The National Championship. This is his story, but it is my story too. I am his teammate and his friend, and when complications arise a few months later, I am his medical proxy. Over the course of a grueling year, while he struggles to survive nine surgeries and a life-threatening infection, I struggle with the enormous responsibility of making medical and ethical decisions on his behalf. My teammate and friend is Fyte von der Staatsmacht. As you might guess from his name, he is German. German Shepherd to be exact. Spoiler alert: Fyte is a dog. But his species is not the point of our story—it is simply a part of our story. Told through my voice and Fyte’s, our experiences offer a unique perspective on finding the balance between trusting medical experts and trusting your gut, as well as attitudes about dying, faith, spirituality, and quality of life. I have been a professional dog trainer and handler for more than 20 years. I have placed dogs with law enforcement, trained service dogs, worked with shelters to rehabilitate “unadoptable” dogs, and trained and handled my own dogs and others for movies, theater, television, and commercials. With my dogs, I have reached the highest level of elite competition in Schutzhund, which sets the standard for canine obedience, stability, and athleticism. With Fyte, I won the National Championship in 2016 and I have represented the United States 4 times at the World Trials. I have been fortunate to compete and travel across the United States and Europe with Fyte as he won numerous titles and broke competition records. With his drive and fighting heart, he had an amazing career ahead of him. But something else happened instead.
